GARB GALLERY
In Oct. 2016, the Fabulous Downey Brothers were invited to host a band retrospective exhibition at the former Lusty Lady in Seattle, WA. For the next two months, visitors were encouraged to interact with the band’s uniforms and headpieces on display in the gallery.
The exhibit hosted a collection of items they had made and worn in shows and music videos for the previous 5 years. The Fabulous Downey Brothers also treated attendants to a live, one-night-only installation performance called “Sector Hoyt” (named after their former band member).
The installation consisted of a giant foam, fully enclosed box built within the gallery space which contained the band, motorized set pieces, all of their instruments, and plenty of packing peanuts. Attendants were provided headphones and asked to stick their heads into holes in the box in order to see and hear FDB play, which limited to the crowd to three spectators at a time. The result was a different kind of live band experience, proving both isolating and intimate. Due to the deliberate viewing and listening limitations imposed by the box set-up, no two audience members were treated to the same experience.
